The documentary
film "Community can" is based on real facts, which
took place in Sumy during spring and summer of 2004. The story
of the 36-minutes film is about the events that later was
historically determined as "revolution on the grass"
(by analogy with the well-known students action at the center
of Kiev in 90-ties, which later got the name "Revolution
on the granite"). The reason for this protest was the
authority's will to unite three universities into one. It
was presented as the so called necessity of joining the Bologna
Process.
That was the first upraising of the youth against human rights
abuse and administrative pressure on the students and on their
self-government organizations, the push to the further struggle
of communities against unfairness, citizen's infringement
of free will expression, and even law ignorance occurred in
the relations "authority-community", created during
the regime of the previous president. The Sumy youth together
with the local community had set the goal to rescind the president's
decree, which, on the whole, is the precedent in the newest
history of Ukraine, omitting the fact of reaching this goal
in real life.
