Jens Schanze's
film is a documentary journey into the past of his own family.
Almost 50% of all Germans believe that their family members
took a stance of opposition during the time of National Socialism.
Jens Schanze, born in 1971, follows the trail of his grandfather
behind the stories of his mother. What is known about him?
What might be known about him but cannot be talked about?
None of the grandchildren have ever met the grandfather who
died in 1954, but everyone has their very own image of him.
For several decades there is has been nothing but silence
about him, when totally unexpected they receive information
about the grandfather, which does not fit the picture of the
loving man their mother always spoke of. Nowadays many German
families grandchildren are starting to ask questions: What
effect does the great silence, which spread out within German
families after World War II, still have on the present generation?
What kind of values were communicated by the parents who had
grown up with the ideology of National Socialism and who as
children were traumatized by the war? Jens Schanze follows
his mother on her very own journey of rediscovering her father,
finally revealing her childhood to her own children. As a
result of the beginning of a dialogue between the post-war
generations, the relationships between the family members
change in an unexpected way leading to a journey of enlightenment.
