The Peacekeepers Paul Cowan / Canada,
France 2005 / 84 min
Unprecedented access to the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping
Operations enabled Paul Cowan to create an accurate and dramatic
depiction of the efforts to avert catastrophe in the Democratic
Republic of Congo, one that could have been far greater than
the tragedy in Rwanda. Focusing on the United Nations mission,
Cowan travels incessantly between the UN headquarters in New
York and the events in the DRC. Hundreds of DRC's inhabitants
died in ethnic fighting, tens of thousands were forced to
leave their homes, over a dozen peacekeepers lost their lives
and the international community spent over a billion dollars
to rescue the African failed state and prevent a complete
destabilization of all of Central Africa during two years
of filming. A second Rwanda has not occurred - at least not
yet.
