State of Weighlessness Maciej Drygas
/ Poland / 1994 / 57 min
What is left of
the Soviet dream to conquer space? After the fall of the USSR,
the funding for the space programme was shut down and the
great myth of the Soviet era began sinking into oblivion.
By interviewing cosmonauts, pioneers of space medicine and
participants of the medical experiments, Drygas subtly builds
a story about the collapse of a dream. He juxtaposes the explorers'
feelings of pride and glory with the horror of the human experiments,
of the catastrophes and deaths, and finally of the oblivion
and the disappointment. He combines multiple and often sensational
facts with a profound metaphor that can be analyzed on several
distinct levels.
