Coca, The Dove
from Chechnya
Eric Bergkraut
/ Switzerland / 2005 / 86 min
Zainap Gashaewa,
a former businesswoman, documents events that since 1994 have
become commonplace in her native Chechnya: kidnappings, tortures,
murders… Along with other women, Zainap collects and hides
the hundreds of videotapes containing evidence of human rights
violations. She then transports them to the West, to one day
be used in court cases - though Zainap thinks her hard work
shan't bear any fruit in the near future. Eric Bergkraut's
film - surely one of the best and most noble films about Chechnya
to date - also stars Lipkhan Basajewa, 2003 laureate of the
so-called alternative Nobel prize, and Anna Politowskaja,
a Russian journalist known for her bold and independent style.
Bergkraut also concentrates his attention on the passive attitude
of the international community with regard to the tragedy
of the Chechnyan people.
