Children of Beslan
Ewa Ewart, Leslie
Woodhead / UK /2005 / 60 min
Ewa Ewart (her
shocking documentary on North Korea was screened at the festival
in 2004) and Leslie Woodhead (in 2001, we showed his "Cry
from the Grave" about the Srebrenica genocide) filmed
the accounts of child survivors of the terrorist attack on
the Beslan school that took place in September 2004. The filmmakers
managed to develop close relationships with the children,
thanks to which the film lacks superficial violence and is
strikingly authentic. But Ewart's and Woodhead's greatest
achievement would have to be the disturbing picture of the
psychological consequences of the traumatic experiences, seen
so clearly in the children's accounts of their daily lives.
