Borderline - The
People vs. Eunice Baker
Stawomir Grunberg
/ USA / 2004 / 75 min
Slawomir Grunberg (whose "School Prayer" was shown
at the festival in 2001) remains a keen observer of American
social life, especially in the realm of individual rights.
His "Borderline" is part of a long tradition of
documentaries exposing faults in American criminal trials.
The film's main character, Eunice Baker, a borderline mentally
disabled woman, was sentenced to long imprisonment for murdering
a child she was babysitting. During her first police interrogation,
she signed a confession stating that she intentionally killed
the child by turning the thermostat in her bedroom up to 35
degrees. Court experts testified, however, that the heat was
caused by a short circuit in the thermostat's wiring.
