Bykov - Nostalgia Wiktor Daszuk /
Belarus 2005 / 75 min
Vasil Bykov, a great Byelorussian writer, adversary of president
Lukashenka and spiritual leader of the Byelorussian democratic
opposition, died in 2003. He spent the last years of his life
abroad - in Finland, Germany and the Czech Republic, but returned
to his homeland just before his death. His funeral turned
into a massive peaceful demonstration. The brilliant film
footage from those events forms the frame of Dashuk's newest
documentary. In 1987, Dashuk filmed "Vasil Bykov - Ascent,"
parts of which were incorporated into his newest film. The
core of the film is an interview given by Bykov to Dashuk
not long before his death, upon meeting at a book fair in
Germany. The nostalgic or even meditative atmosphere is made
even more contemplative by the use of old films that illustrate
Bykov's way of seeing and experiencing the world.
