Decent Factory
Thomas Balm?s / Finland, France 2004 / 79 min
Thomas Balm?s'
documentary stands among the many films dealing with the
issue of work conditions in the factories of huge
corporations exploiting cheap labor for its presented
perspective. A Chinese supplier for Nokia, the Finnish
telecommunications giant, is seen through the eyes of Hannah
Kaskinen, a company employee responsible for the Pilot
Ethical Program. Hannah visits the telephone component
factory in the company of Louise Jamison, a British
corporate ethics expert, with the aim of verifying on site
the observance of labor law and minimum standards. Thanks to
this perspective as well as a descriptive rather than
prescriptive attitude, Balm?s' film poses the question of
the Western world's moral responsibility for labor
conditions in the global economy in a more stark and
in-depth manner than documentaries which are much more
explicit in the visual respect
