A Day in the People's
Republic of Poland Maciej Drygas /
Poland 2005 / 57 min
Maciej Drygas' latest film - highly acclaimed by the Polish
press - is another product of his love for archives. Films
from a single day, Thursday, September 27, 1962, a day when
nothing special happened, is a brilliant depiction of life
in a totalitarian state. The text material in the documentary
comes exclusively from authentic databases, archives of the
Institute of National Memory, complaint and suggestion books,
military archives, and private letters. The visual material
is made up of excellently edited archive footage of the time.
Drygas' film is sometimes grotesquely humorous, but on the
whole quite disturbing. It shows the possibilities of documentary
cinema in producing deep and synthetic images of social life.
