Devotion and Defiance : The Tibetan Struggle for Religious Freedom
Over 50 years ago, the Communist authorities of China declared war on Tibetan Buddhism, which is the core of Tibetan identity. After razing nearly all monasteries during the Cultural Revolution and the decade of “liberalization,” in the mid-90s, Beijing again attacked the religion, deeming it the greatest threat to its rule over the “Roof of the world.”
Despite draconian punishments and brutality of security forces, Tibetans do not intend to give up their faith; they pray and fight for lha gjal lo – “victory to the Gods.”
