Justice – in Time of War
In 1996, Italian student Giacomo Turra traveled to Columbia to conduct research on indigenous peoples living in the Sierra Nevada . One day, he was found dead. Columbian authorities listed the cause of death as a drug overdose. However, marks on Turra's body indicated he had been beaten. All signs pointed to the Columbian police. The perpetrators of the murder have remained unpunished. Nevertheless, Turra's family has steadfastly continued fighting to bring those responsible to justice.
Lazzaretti's thoughtful, carefully crafted film is exceptionally rich in meaning. For the makers of “Justice – in Time of War,” Turra's story is a family drama, the life of a poet and eminent activist in a world being shattered by war, an opportunity to compare and contrast the Euro-Atlantic civilization with pre-Columbian cultures, a tale of the fight for justice and finally, a metaphor for Columbia today – a country being torn apart by the never-ending civil war, where people perish every day at the hands of the police, military, guerillas, paramilitary groups and drug gangs with complete impunity.
