Nord Ost
The final installment of Mariusz Malec's “Chechen Trilogy” is “Nord Ost – Theater of Death.” This two-part film about the terrorist attack on the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow goes from a journalistic reconstruction of events in the first part, to a documentary focus on a selected figure in the second, recounting the story of the death of two very young artists. Archive materials, including previously unseen operational shots of Russian special forces, are set against recollections of the hostages – the audience and actors of the “Nord Ost” spectacle, as well as their dear ones. The image of a poorly prepared rescue mission that resulted in the death of 130 hostages emerges from the documentary.
